Savory Ram Ladoo, one of the chatpata foods from the streets of Delhi. I grew up eating this and love it to the core. These ladoos are made with mung dal (lentil) and bengal gram dal. When you hear the word ladoo, we think of sweet. But Ram Ladoo, is a savory snack which is tangy(Chapata) and yummilicious. These ladoos are golden crispy from outside, and soft from the inside. They can be enjoyed at anytime of the day.
One of my favorite street foods other than golgappe, chaat papri, aloo tikki chaat. You say chaat and I will never say no. When I move to US back in 1993, I used to miss all these little things which we didn’t get here, specially in FL. Back home it was so easy, you hear the vendors on the streets selling these yummy delicacies.
Why I like these Savory Ram Ladoos?

- Can be made ahead
- Loved by everyone
- Chatpata and yummy
These chatpata snacks will tickle your taste buds for sure. Believe me, once you try these you will never go back. So, lets look what are these Ram Ladoo are all about.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup moong dal
- 1/4 cup chana dal
- 2 green chilies
- 1/4 tsp asafetida
- inch of ginger
- salt to taste
- 1/4 tsp red chili powder
- 1 daikon radish, grated
- cilantro to garnish
- Mint/Cilantro Chutney
- Tamarind chutney (a little thinner)
- 1/4 tsp kala namak (rock salt)
- 1/4 tsp roasted cumin powder
- 1/4 tsp chaat masala
- 1/4 tsp baking soda
Directions:
Soak both dals for at least 4 hours. Then grind them to a fine batter without adding water along with ginger, green chili, salt, red chili powder, asafetida. Beat the batter until the the color changes from yellow to white. This helps them get fluffier and soft.
Deep fry them or you can make them in the appe pan, if you are looking for a healthier version. When you make it in appe pan, they take a little longer but won’t give you the fluffiness but the taste should be the same. Grate the radish and set aside. Make sure your chutneys are not very thick, if it is, add a little water and make it into runny consistency.
To the tamarind chutney, add kala namak, cumin powder and mix well. To assemble, place the ladoos in a plate, put the tamarind chutney, green chutney and garnish with grated radish, chaat masala, & cilantro.
You can make the ladoos ahead of time and store them in a air tight container. Right before serving warm them up in the microwave and assemble them. Enjoy this yummy snack whenever you are looking for something quick and chapata.

Can these be made ahead and served cold? I’m thinking for a picnic.
Apologies for the delay in responding. You can as they are not served hot. Once you assemble them, you can take it in a box arranged in a single line topped with chutneys and radish mixture. Hope this helps
Thank you so much. I run a chaat stall in the uk and want to add extra items and ram Ladoo is a perfect choice. My Insta and Twitter is @thechaatwalas – hope you approve
