Masoor daal is one of the regular daals in my kitchen. This is my daughter’s favorite daal too. It is very easy to make specially on those busy week nights when you have limited time. This doesn’t need soaking overnight like a couple of other lentils. It literally takes 15 minutes to prepare this daal with a handful ingredients.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup masoor dal
- 2 cups water
- salt to taste
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- 4-5 curry leaves
- 1-2 whole red dry chillies
- 2 tbsps olive oil
- 1/2 tsp turmeric
- 1/4 tsp red chilli powder
- tomato puree
- 5-6 cloves garlic chopped
- 1-2 green chillies chopped
- ginger chopped
Directions:
Wash the daal thoroughly. In a pressure cooker, add olive oil and then add the whole red chillies, mustard seeds and curry leaves. Let it splutter.
Add the chopped garlic and let it turn slightly brown, then add ginger and green chillies.
Stir for a couple of minutes then add the tomato puree. Let it cook for 3-4 minutes and add turmeric, salt and red chilli powder.
At this time, add the washed daal and stir for a few minutes. Now add water and place the pressure cooker lid and cook it for 10-15 minutes or 2-3 whistles. Open the pressure cooker and check the consistency to see how thick or thin the daal is and adjust accordingly. Garnish with chopped cilantro and serve hot with rice or roti.
