What is Dhokla? A healthy Gujarati delicacy which can be enjoyed for breakfast or snack with spiced tea….ooohh yum yum. I just love dhokla at any time of the day. There are so many ways you can make dhokla. You can make dhokla using different ingredients but today I am bringing you the Instant Sooji Dhokla that too in the Instant Pot. Isn’t it lovely!!!
I have made Khaman Dhokla before but not in the instant pot so wanted to give it a try. Instant Pot has changed the way we have been cooking these days. Love the way we don’t have to worry about cleaning so many dishes, we can prepare one-pot meals and don’t have to keep an eye on it too.
I just love Dhokla and I can eat it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I know I sound a bit crazy but after you try this, you will fall in love with it too. Trust me, won’t be disappointed. My daughter taste buds are very similar to mine and she enjoys dhokla too. Once you try, you will say the same thing as me.
I learned Khaman from my Gujrati blogger friend and I followed Nisha Madhulika’s recipe on this one. I adjusted sugar slightly and tried making it in the Instant Pot instead of a regular way of steaming.
Why I love Dhokla?
- healthy appetizer
- quick and easy
- liked by everyone
- can be eaten any time of the day
Now let us get to the recipe and see what the hype about this dhokla. So are you ready to try this, don’t forget to share your feedback?
Ingredients:
- 1 cup sooji (semolina)
- 1 cup yogurt
- 1-inch ginger
- 1-2 green chilies
- 3/4 tsp salt or to taste
- 1/2 tsp sugar
- 1 tsp Eno fruit salt
- 3/4 tsp mustard seeds
- 1 tsp whole sesame seeds
- 8-10 curry leaves
- 2 tbsp canola oil
Directions:
First of all, grate ginger and green chili together and set aside. In a mixing bowl, whisk the yogurt and add the grated ginger and chili. Or you can put the yogurt along with ginger and green chili and blend it together.
Now add the sooji to the yogurt along with salt and sugar. Mix it all together and let it sit for 30-40 mins. After 30 mins of resting time add about 1.5 cup water to the stainless steel pot and press the SAUTE button and let the water heat for 5mins. Place the wire rack in it. Oil the container in which you are going to steam the dhokla. I used a stainless steel container that I have, if you don’t have it then you can use a cake pan that will fit inside the pot.
Close the lid and set the valve to venting and turn it off and press the STEAM button. Steam the dhokla for 13-14 mins, you can’t the set the timer on the pot but will have to keep an eye on the time. Open the lid and take the container out.
Now in a small fry pan, heat the oil. Add mustard seeds, curry leaves, and sesame seeds. Let them splutter. Spoon it all over the dhokla and then cut them into pieces. At this time, dhokla is ready to be served.
Serve it hot with mint chutney and a hot cup of tea.
