Achaari Aloo

Aloo, being everyone’s favorite is made often in most of the households.  My kids love aloo, so does my husband.  I was thinking of making a different flavor in aloo, so planned on making Achaari Aloo (Pickled Potatoes).

My 4yr son loves potatoes but he only eats it one way.  So today when I gave him to eat, I thought he will say I don’t this aloo mama..But I was surprised to hear that, “Mama, the orange aloo is yummy.”  He just made my day.

The Achaari Masala is such a versatile spice that you can put it in anything and it will taste good.  This has been on my list for a while now, but then something or the other.

DSC_3804Achaari Aloo is full of loads of flavor and is such an quick and easy dish to prepare.  I always have Achaari Masala in my pantry.  Love the flavors of fennel seeds, onion seeds, mustard seeds…Pickling spice gives aloo the spicy, tangy flavor and a lovely aroma.  One can use small whole baby potatoes or the regular potatoes cut into cubes.

Ingredients:

  • 6-8 medium sized potatoes
  • 1 large onion, cubed
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 2 whole dry red chilies
  • salt to taste
  • 1-2 green chilies, chopped
  • 1-2 tsp achaari masala (used homemade)
  • 3/4 tsp garam masala
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 3/4 tsp red chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp paprika powder
  • 2 tbsp yogurt

Directions:

Boil the potatoes, don’t over boil so they become mushy.  Drain and set them aside to cool down.  Peel them and cut it into cubes.

In a kadhai, add oil and heat it up.  Add mustard seeds and whole red chilies and let it splutter.  Then add cubes onions.  Sauté for a couple of minutes until translucent.

DSC_3802Then add the potatoes, green chilies along with all the spices and mix well.  Cover it for a couple of minutes.  Now add yogurt and mix it well.  Cover it again.  Let the flavors marry.

DSC_3803These flavorful Achaari Aloo are ready in a jiffy to be served with a paratha, puri or chapati per your choice.   I enjoyed it with masoor dal and chaawal.
